So I have a 970 with a displayport and a dual link dvi-d and I know both of them will enable 144hz.. but I was just wondering if I should stick with a dual link dvi-d, or is a displayport better than that? I can either go with a BenQ XL2411Z which only has a dvi-d, or an ASUS VG248QE which has a dual link dvi-d, dvi-i and a displayport.. which one is better?

1080p 144Hz is 1080p 144Hz whether you use DVI-D or DisplayPort. DisplayPort's 1080p 144Hz isn't any better than DVI-D's. The only difference is that DVI-D will not carry inline audio, and DisplayPort will.

what do you mean by inline audio? like let's say I have a logitech g430 headset, where would I plug the cables? to my pc? I'm kinda a noob at this I'm sorry.. and it's rare seeing a moderstor comment on my stuff hehe

People will tell you DisplayPort, but it doesn't matter at 1080p.  Keep your DP cable around if you wish to run higher resolutions in the future at 144Hz, or if you want to do downsampling the hard way.

the only thing I don't really understand is the inline audio.. if I plug my headphones into my computer io, will the audio from the monitor be synced to my headphones? I don't get that part.. or will i have to connect my headphones into the monitor ornwhat

It will carry audio to your monitor just as it carries video to your monitor, so your monitor's built-in speakers will work without needing a separate cable. The monitor also has an audio out jack so you could route the audio to different speakera or headphones plugged into the monitor if you wanted. You don't need to though.

When you have multiple audio devices attached (i.e. monitor through DP and headphones directly connected) you can choose in Windows which output device should be used. Typically the headphone jack takes priority over speakers by default if something is plugged into it.

I have been trying to verify how the Acer GN246HL can do 144Hz without using the display port.  The reason is that it does not have that connection.  I am looking it up for @immanueltja.

Does DVI-D (4.59 Gbps) do 1080p/144Hz on it's own?  Do you need to do DVI-D and the HDMI?  How does it work?

The Acer gets 1080p 144Hz through Dual-Link DVI-D.

That part confused me.  The monitor only has one DVI-D port.  Is that one port Dual-Link?

Yes, dual link is a type of DVI connector, it does not literally mean two DVI connections :)

That is a Dual-Link DVI port. You can reference the link I posted above to see the details and how to identify what type of DVI port it is.
