PCI based network for old computer

Numbafieve

So i'm having a bit of a hard time deciding what to do here.  I have an old computer that died so i replaced the motherboard without thinking about how to connect it to the internet.  One would think they could use the ethernet jack on the motherboard but it doesn't seem to be working and the one network card i have is PCIe based but the motherboard only has 1 PCIe slot that is being used by the GPU.  It does however have a PCI slot so i was thinking about what if i just got a PCI network card instead?  I dont have any experience using PCI so im thinking its probably going to be too slow or i'm going to have the same problem where the computer just wants to use PCIe instead and won't even look for the ethernet cord that i plug into the motherboard.  If this doesn't work I think i might just chuck this stupid computer out the window, it has caused so many problems.

In case you are wondering about the basic specs

Q8200, GTX650, 4GB RAM, win vista, some cheapo $20 mobo i found on ebay

i have found a metric button of PCI cards but im still skeptical on if they will work.  Right now im trying to get that stupid computer to connect to the internet via that network card in the PCIe 16x slot and its not working without drivers so im trying a Dlink usb connector that has the worlds worst installation process
