Hello everyone, i am in the process of upgrading my pc that i use for gaming and also computer science work for uni. i have decided to get a Xeon E3 1231v3 and a MSI Z87 motherboard. i have a R9 280 4GB and currently only two 1TB HDD. I want to add a SSD for booting and some games. and i want to upgrade my ram.

I have 2 x 4GB XMS3 DDR3 ram sticks. i was wondering if i could add 2 x 8GB XMS3 sticks to bring the memory up to 24GB. would this work or would it be a better idea to just get another 2 x 4GB XMS3 sticks to get 16GB ram.

Thank you for reading and helping,

Kieran Austin

As far as I know, you have to have the same RAM all around, so you would need  2 x 4GB XMS3 sticks.

My legit rig:

yeah, it'll work fine either way. Since z87 doesn't support quad channel, there's no reason not to get 24 gb instead of 16
