I would personally look at a Noctua cooler (Only because I'm a sucker for their quality). And if all you are doing is gaming, then it's easy enough for you to switch over to a Z170 platform that's paired with a 6600k. That would save you a bit of money, whilst still giving you very similar gaming performance.

The way I planned it out was buy one GTX 970 and then maybe upgrade to SLI of them.

The Hyper 212 EVO is nothing special but it works and the load temps are under 70C and idle under 40C.

I did consider getting a D15 but at the time I didn't have enough money and even less patience.

I will never ever move to skylake.

Yes, but in some games it is a liability, this haas been seen so many times for example in Dying Light where the optimisation for AMD is not up to standard or even low.
