New build help

Go to solution Solved by TonyStark,

Hello. first things first...there is no "real" future proof machine....the rule is.."the more money you spend the more is going to last but eventually you'll do it all over again"...Both EVGA & Corsair are good brands and have nice products. So far the internals of Corsair PSUs were made by PC power & cooling which are one of the best there are in my opinion. If you are planning to get a better (or more than one GPUs) later on I'd say you go with the bigger one...either ways since all the PSUs are switching PSUs they only draw the power they need and not all the power they can. Last but not least its what your pocket can handle....

here is the build i'm planning to get in 1 or 2 months:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/xfdxXL

i'd like to build this the more future proof possible since this will be the first build i'll be paying myself

i will stay with my r9 280x because i decided to wait till later this year for the new graphic cards to come out

i'm undecided between those two psu:

my other doubt is on all the case fans/aio fans/case pwm fan controller/corsair link thing

what will be the best way to set all this up?

will be worth to change every fan to a noctua one?

from my limited knowledge, this apears to be fairly future proof. the only thing I did not notice on the list was a psu. if you already have one, then make sure it can power everything. if you will buy one, don't get one with more than you will need for the next few years. going over the top will not help

The smartest idiot you will ever find

absolutely no need for 1000Watt, get 850 at most, GPU don`t suck as much power as they used to, get a EVGA G2/GS 750/850 (if you`re in for CF or SLI), XFX PSU or Seasonic PSU

If future proof is the issue you may as well go with 1000w, never know what will turn up in 3 years time. I am still running my realpower m1000 I bought 9 years ago! granted right now I don't max it out but it was necessary back when I bought it and it could be necessary again in the future. The 1000w power supply OP specified seems to be a good one from what I read (haven't researched it since I had no need for one when I was building my current system). If you wanna spend on futures  proof PSU is the only thing you can actually get years of use from. anything else becomes irrelevant after 3-4 years max!

But I really don`t think 200$ can make up for that `future proofing`, mainly because reduction in power needed is probably were where going with all that ECO shit goin` on in the world and power isn`t cheap. So I think they`ll stick to ECO PC`s. By the way, for a 100$ you can get a 750/850 one that is exceptionally good, maybe not better than the 200$ one, but that`s what the money difference indicates.

to game or not to game, that`s the question

I agree, when I bought mine it cost nearly 300EUR, that was just a bit cheaper than the rampage II extreme, which was quite an expensive board back then. Still, given one spends 500eur on a graphics card (at best) for a max of 4 years use, it is obviously worth the value. Nevertheless, I was playing around with pcpartpicker and actually, a 5820k with 980ti's in sli and a couple of drives will easily overcome the 850w power available. Bottom line is, if in 2 or 3 years OP decides they will spend 2000eur on a system, I think that a 1000w PSU will shine. In the end of the day, that 100dollar difference, from a depreciation stand point is the most justifiable in any rig, it will yield much more return I believe than going with a 6700k over a 6700.

I do understand what you`re saying, but I think there are cheaper solutions for it, which will do fine, I think investing in a better CPU or GPU would be smarter (PC gamers for a reason, performance FTW), than investing in that PSU. And quit honestly, there aren`t many peeps that use such a powerfull CPU and SLI.

I prefer the evga one not for the 1000W (i know i won't never need that much) but for the general better build quality and the awesome 10 years warranty. In the end i will save more money buyng something pricier now and not having to replace it in some years. My doubt was more on the corsair link i would get with the ax860i is it worth? especially since that case comes with an integrated pwm fan controller.

I agree, the reason I needed that is I was running crossfire X for a short while and I wouldn't wish the experience on anyone (although granted they ought to have fixed that by now). However, that doesn't overcome the possibility of something like that being built in the future.

I don't know (mostly because I was out of the game for quite a while) when brands like EVGA and XFX became so good in PSUs. frankly I wouldn't consider them over Corsair, however I am a person who used to swear by enermax galaxy and ?CM PSUs back in the day so what do I know;P

The fact that EVGA offers a 10 year warranty, and as far as I remember they used to be quite good with mobo's and gpu's that means they really stand by the quality of their product. I have no idea how corsair link works but i am sure you can do without it. In that sense, my PSU would still be within warranty, 10 years is a long time, people keep cars for less.

If pricing is as in the links you provided, in my opinion the EVGA is the obvious choice. the 80usd difference is just not justified for corsair link and silent operation at up to 260watts.

EVGA FTW, EVGA is a better than Corsair these days

EDIT: btw, EVGA also has some sort of a ECO/silence mode, which also makes it reallly silence

what about the fans? is it worth to replace the ones in the case or the aio ones? i've heard the phanteks case fans are pretty good but i don't know about the fans on the gtx h110i

You'd be paying a lot on fans and I don't see the point. I don't believe you should change every single fan, you are unlikely to run in anything but comfortable temperatures anyway, especially the cpu, while gaming my 6700k is practically idleing, even if you play cpu intensive staff it is unlikely to reach any uncomfortable temperatures so why bother.

If you are to add any fans that's a different story.

AMD GPU's I believe can get quite hot but still not much you can do. Stick with the stock fans and buy an ssd or something its not worth the money really.
