Getting Into CPU Overclocking

Go to solution Solved by arielbeje,

Either mobo is fine. I would get something like an ASUS X99-A to save cost. As for CPU cooler a Noctua will work but it won't give you the max OC possible. You are better off getting an AIO watercooler such as a Corsair H110i for max overclock.

There are some minor differences, but nothing really worth mentioning. I'd base my final choice on aesthetics and price rather such details.

OK then, I guess I will just get the X99 Deluxe with the H110i. Thank you!

I want to get into CPU overclocking with my new build, will a Noctua NH-D15 be enough for a 5820K?

Also, will the OC module on the Asus RAMPAGE V Extreme help me get into it, or should I just get the X99 Deluxe?

The module, itself, won't really help you. What helps is the OC socket, which both mobos have anyway.....

The X99 Deluxe will be just fine. Motherboards don't affect overclocks that much anymore.

Is there any difference other than that between the two Mother Boards?

I don't really care about the price/aesthetics as I will be building in a case without a window, are you sure there isn't anything?

that is true. and asus is the best mobo vendor anyway, so its good decision either way, its just comes down to features and what you are willing to spend.

D15 is perfectly okay. if i am not mistaken, its still the best air cooler out there but it has a bit of a price premium. however, the fans will last forever and heatsink obviously aswell.

you could go cheaper and get 50$ heatsink like Thermalight TS 140 POWER.

x99 is good deal compared to z170, often better, unless you start buying 500$ motherboards :)

otherwise it can cost like 20$ more than z170 i7... no brainer

might get 100-150mhz more out of it, not sure if its worth it, but i tend to not recommend AIOs for reliablity reasons. even if the chance of pump noise / failure / leak is low, you will likely not use it for next build, whereas D15 will last more time that you want it to. :P if that is a good reason.

i am not trying to overcomplicate your choice, but you might look at user feedback http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/462563-best-cooling-solution-for-i7-5820k-air-or-water/

i have been on this forum a while, and i have seen people crying about leaks, noisy pumps (and fans, unsuprisingly), even pump failures or even see review samples being faulty on review channels...

The Noctua is really good for 4 core cpus but it gets bottlenecked on 6 cores at around 1.25-1.3v. With the AIO you can hit 1.35v no problem. You are right it is more noisy tho.

@OP. you might wanna consider the pro instead of the deluxe. it's almost the exact samething except cheaper.

I don't have that MoBo in my country, but back to the H110i.

The NH-D15 performs just as well as some 240mm AIOs.
