External GPUs for laptops

I'm really interested adding an external to my laptop but i'm not really sure how to do it. While snooping around the internet I've seen some MINI PCIE to PCIE adapters but I've also found one that use the thunderbolt connectors. Could anyone care to explain or show me useful links as to how that works? And is it compatible with my laptop: G75VX. Also what sort of gpus would be good to use externally with this laptop, that won't bottle neck the graphics card.
