I currently own a MSI 970A-G43 mobo and the Scythe Mugen 4 cooler. I will be switching the mobo to an Asrock 990fx fatal1ty killer. Since I don't need a backplate now I would like to know if I will need one with the new mobo.

Since I will have to take the cooler down which thermal paste should I get?

I have the same motherboard (ASRock one), what backplate are you talking about? The one that's necessary to mount the cooler? If you don't have it, it means that you don't need it. You should have it though.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

I'm confused on your question...

"Since I don't need a backplate now". What caused you to not need the mounting mechanism anymore?

So my mobo already has a backplate which was holding the existing mounting mechanism.

Is that like an amd thing, that the backplates are on the board or do I need to get one, since the cooler did not come with one, but I would like to be sure before ordering anything.

So the board already has a sort of a backplate that holds the amd stock cooler mounts.

I believe it utilizes the AMD stock backplate that comes with the board. So the one that comes with the cooler isn't needed. It's for Intel only anyway.

OP: The same goes for your new board, just use the backplate from that one. For warranty-reasons, put the old backplate back on the old board and use the new backplate from the new board. I'd go with Silver5 for thermal paste.

I will be leaving the backplate on the old board, since it will be going in my dad's pc.

But that's only for the stock coolers. Aftermarket ones should have a custom one

I haven't tried taking that one off, since the cooler did not come with one, and I had to use that one to be even able to mount the cooler.

If it works, sure, you will need it but you will get the same backplate with the new motherboard anyway
