Why do some monitors have multiple connectors.   I dont mean different types, I mean some will have 2 HDMI connectors for example.   Why?  What purpose does it serve to have several of the same connector?

Let me get this straight... Your engine is 1.9 liters and my Pepsi is 2?

Having multiple devices plugged into it like a PC and a PS4. Same principle as a TV.

Ok, how does the monitor know which device to display?

Usually there's a way to select it in the monitor's Graphical User Interface.

Ok, so its not like you can daisy chain monitors or anything.    So for me only using 1 pc, I dont need to care how many connectors there are.

As far as I know, daisy chaining displays together isn't possible.

You can daisy-chain monitors using DisplayPort, but it has to be a feature specifically supported by the monitor, with a dedicated DisplayPort output port.

My Dells have 2 HDMI ports and 2 DisplayPorts and I use all 4 of them :P but yes if you only have 1 device, you only need 1 input.

I only thought that DP could be split into two mini ports.

Nope. DisplayPort 1.2 can daisy chain up to four monitors from a single output, DisplayPort 1.3 up to seven. I'm running daisy-chained monitors right now ;)

What resolutions? 1080p?

Yes. At 2560x1440 you can do two/four on DP 1.2/DP 1.3, and at 4K you can do one/two on DP 1.2/DP 1.3.

Cool stuff. Admittedly, I don't know as much as you with display outputs. :P
