Hey guys! I'm looking to build a super cheap system to take to LAN parties and such. I came across this server memory while browsing my local classifieds, and if it would work with consumer boards, the value would be very good. However, i'm not sure about the compatibility. Would you guys be able to tell me if this memory would be compatible with consumer boards?

Any advice would be useful, but I was looking to try out an AMD build so if it's compatible with an AMD 990FX board, that would be awesome. Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah that would probably be a more safe idea, but I was just curious. I may try it. Not sure yet.

I didn't Google the model number provided but when ram is mentioned to be server ram then they mean it is ECC ram which is not compatible with non server setups.

Interesting... I keep finding different people saying different things. I just read a thread where someone got a Gigabyte GA-990FXA UD5 (which is the board i'm looking at getting) working with ECC memory. Others get it working with varying degrees of success with actually getting ECC working. I don't care at all about actually having ECC, I just think that 16gb of ram for $50 is a pretty good deal.

Take a look at the chipset of those that do support it, those aren't consumer chipset (C602, etc). They might be packaged up to look like consumer boards but the chipset gives it a server heritage. Also, sometimes the xeon e-1200 range looks like consumer setups because it's a single chip and it's not very expensive. The memory controller is also found on the cpu more these days and then compatibility is also held there for whichever ram as long as the mobo allows it.

And anyway, it's simple to just check in your mobo manual if it supports ecc ram. Problem solved.
