We just had a faster internet plan installed, but my speed tests are telling a very different story. Hope you can keep up.

We had a 20 Mbps speed and the results were as follows:

Upstairs Laptop: 16 Mbps

Downstairs Desktop: 10 Mbps

After the upgrade to 40 Mbps:

Upstairs Laptop: 30 Mbps

At the bottom of the stairs: 16 Mbps

Downstairs Desktop: 2-5 Mbps

I used the WiFi analyzer on my Note 4 and it is telling me that upstairs, the dBm is in the -40 to -50 range, but around the desktop downstairs it is between -70 and -80. I don't know if that means anything but does anyone know why the wifi is crap downstairs? Would a range extender or powerline ethernet help the issue?

Please don't use Wi-Fi at all, if you can avoid it.

If you can plug a device directly into the router and get the speeds you're told you should be getting, then the problem is with your local network, and improving the networking equipment will likely improve speeds.

Sig under construction.

-70 to -80 is terrible signal reception.  I'd seriously consider installing a cat5e in the wall from the router to your downstairs system.  If you must use wifi, an aftermarket solution may help but it's no guarantee.  I have 2 ap's in my house but they're for phones and tablets and stuff.  Everything else is wired into a switch which is connected to my router.

Laws only govern the honest.

I would like to avoid it, but the house is not wired for cat5e. The only lines that are available are the phone lines that the modem/router is plugged into. Idk if it's possible to use those at all.

I would install a cat5e system in the one room at least, but I don't have the finances to pay an electrician to install one, and I sure don't know how to install one myself.

Are you using the All-in-one Modem/Router goven to you by your Internet service provider? If so you should probably upgrade that.

Yes I am. And I would assume that better equipment would work better, but as mentioned before, I don't have money to install a wired system.

Wired is not required. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. A upgrade in router and modem would be ideal though if possible. I have a really good Asus router apart from my modem but my mothers laptop still can't leave the room that it's in. It's hit and miss
