So I'm looking for some advice about my GPU. I was running 2 Asus HD7870s crossfired when I originally built this rig. As I've gotten more advanced with my editing it was getting bogged down. So I picked up a used Quadro 5000 as it was one of the highest supported GPUs for CS6. In editing so for there seems to be no noticeable difference and the GPU monitor shows no usage. I have yet to render a project out though as this card idles at 81* and shoots up from there with use. Since Asus AI suite is broken in Windows 10 I had to get a new fan controller which I'm putting in today to see if I can bring those temps down with adjustments to the case fans.

My question is was I better off with the 2 HD 7870s as they are ~1000mhz and 2gb each of GDDR5 vs the Quadro which is ~500mhz and 2.5gb GDDR and the CUDA boosting.

Thanks-JF140/Cody

First off, if that GPU is IDLING at 81*, there's a massive issue there.

Second, in order to utilize a GPU in rendering, the codec you select for the final render has to support some sort of GPU API- either with CUDA or OpenGL.

To clarify temps true idle with displays asleep is ~50* but as soon as I do anything (broswe files, chech fb, basic level stuff with GPU usage less then 10%) it jumps to 81 and more intensive stuff (watching videos...) it climbs from there. The fan is spinning and I readjusted a case fan to blow on it and that did bring the normal usage temps down into the 70's so some imporvement there.

I realize that the CUDA only works on some render types and plug ins. My issue was just in trying to preview the project while working without it severely lagging. I guess what I'm trying to determine is the limited CUDA boosting worth the loss in net GPU speed.

Even 70C is way too high if you're not playing a game or running a benchmark or something. If you're just playing videos and things like that, it shouldn't even reach 60C.

From what I found in my research yesterday these cards tend to run high. Probably due to the poor cooling design. It has 1 fan thats kinda sad. I readjusted things in my case and it now runs at a steady low to mid 70C with ~50% GPU usage and only reaching 80C after prolonged maxed out usage.
