GPU overclocking limited by...

so I just upgraded my mobo and CPU and noticed that I was now able to over clock my gpu's...

so what my query here is... how much emphasis does the motherboard and/or CPU have when determining GPU over clock potential?

old gear:

i7 920

Asus P6T Deluxe V2

new gear:

4770k

Asus z87-deluxe

GPUs involved:

2x evga gtx570hd

with old gear I couldn't even oc by 1mhz... but now I can go from stock clock of 732mhz up to 880 no prob.

CPU: Intel 4770k @ 4.6Ghtz MB: Asus z87-Deluxe RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance Red 1866mhtz Storage: Corsair Force 3 120GBx2 PSU: Corsair HX1000 GPU: ASUS GTX 780 DCU2 Case: Define R4

Could do with more stable power delivery through the PCI-E slot... hard to say. Some of the newer board have 4/6pins just for the PCI-E slots

732mhz to 880mhz is a monster jump! I could only get an extra +46mhz on the core and +200mhz on the memory on my GTX670 but apparently the more memory you have on the card the worse potential for OC'ing, though I can't back that up with anything.
