hard drive question

So I think I watched a video once of hard drives and I think I remember hearing if you're hard drive gets to a certain amount of capacity filled it will be laggy or slow is this true? I am wondering because I'm 500GBs into my 1tb hard drive so I am wondering if it's time to get another one.

when you have 900 GB - 950 GB its about time. your still good

You might be thinking of the data getting fragmented.  It occurs pretty frequently for me since i keep things for about a month and then delete them.

most storage media start to slow down when they have less than 10% left, or at least 900 GB
