So I made the mistake of getting a 450w Power Supply, when I done a small system upgrade earlier this year. Now, I'm looking to go 4K, and will need at least 1, (possibly 2 in the future) GTX 980ti's. So, looking at a power supply calculator, I'm looking at using approx 500w under load with 1 980ti. Apparently these can sometimes over calculate what components actually use.

 

Running my setup, with 1 980ti (in place of my old 750 ti), would that possibly scrape into the 450w margin? Or am I going to have to upgrade yet again?

Are you 100% sure you are going to do an SLI configuration in the future? If you do you need to get at least an 850W PSU. If you do not plan to do an SLI configuration in the future then 550W PSU is more than enough (It does depend if you are planning to overclock you CPU and GPU).

If you have a solid 450w, it should be able to power a 980 Ti without an issue.

If you have a solid 450w, it should be able to power a 980 Ti without an issue.

Absolutely, if you plan on getting something like a 980ti or especially 2, you DONT cheap out on a psu or you'll fry something.

 

I'd recommend 850W+ (gold pref) but there's a bunch of calculators out there that can tell you how much power you need.

As a rule of thumb, I generally look at system draw, and get a PSU that will result in 60% power draw at load. No more than that so that the PSU is not overly stressed during heavy use.

 

I've had a Corsait TX750m (750w) PSU for about 4 years now and it's perfect throughout use with an MSI R6970 Lightning, Asus GTX 770 and currently on Asus GTX 970 Strix

 

Just to note, if you throw an extra $20 into a PSU to get 1000w, this doesn't mean you'll always draw 1000w. You'll only draw as much as the system needs so get as good PSU as you can afford without going over the top like 1200w :D

You have a Corsair VS450? That's a low-quality power supply. It's okay with the GTX 750 Ti that draws little power, but a GTX 980 Ti will put a lot more strain on the power supply. The VS450 may not last long under that strain.

 

I would recommend an upgrade as soon as you can afford it. You don't need lots more wattage, mostly higher quality.

If you're overclocking your clue and gpu when u get a 980ti and don't plan on getting a second 980ti then go for a 650w if ur planing to sli plus overclock and mess with the voltages 850w-1000w but 850w is pretty overkill and is good enough, 1000w is major over kill and u would never need to change ur power supply ever
