I'm currently planning on building a (mainly) gaming PC. At the moment I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 8100. It has an Intel Core i7 870 @2.93 with no overclocking.

I was wondering if I can save some money and use this CPU in my new build and expect some decent performance alongside a GTX 770 in games, or should I just leave it and buy a new CPU altogether?

Many thanks!

The i7-870 will be perfectly fine for a GTX 770, don't worry about it.

Just google "i7 870 + gtx 770" and bunch of youtube videos will show up. Check what kind of performance those guys are getting.

PS: Welcome to the forums!

It's a fine CPU but very old. You're not going to find a new motherboard and RAM to go with it. So you're gonna keep the mobo and RAM you already have. Buying an SSD for it can help a bit but your old motherboard probably only supports sata-II and a good HDD can saturate that. The bulk of the speed-gain from an SSD would go to waste. So you're basically just swapping your GPU and probably PSU. Which will definitely blow new life into games but isn't a 'new build' per se.

Just one little thing to add: A good HDD still can't really saturate SATA II. An SSD would still make things a tad faster (up to 275mb/s speeds) but then again it would be bottlenecked compared to SATA III. If he can grab a cheap SSD though, it could make sense.

Also yes your best bet is to use the motherboard that came with the Dell or upgrade altogether.
