You can but anything above two-way SLI (in my opinion) is a waste of money, unless you're running a triple monitor setup.

EVen then, im running

older (not super old mind you) things on 3 screens with a few compromizes, Dirt 3 Dirt Rally Assetto Corsa, Elite Dangerous 

 

Hell I even got dirt 3 to run 3 screen all in 3d on my system, granted it was 30 fps and I had to lower the settings a smidge off max, but I did it.

can you do 3 way sli with the new asus gtx 980ti strix and what would be the best motherboard for them

You'll need to find a motherboard that is certified to do SLI and has three PCIE lanes that can all do at least Gen 2 x8 speed simultanously (I think it's gen 2, not sure if 3 or 2).

3 way is really the max for scaling but i would wait to see what amd releases anyway 3 way is kind of a waste
