OLED Monitors?

Go to solution Solved by Glenwing,

I was wondering if there were any OLED monitors available. And why they're so rare to see. OLED is pretty common in phones, why not monitors?

Dell announced one at CES but it's a professional-grade monitor, not a consumer display, and it's priced at around $5K.

Other than that, no OLED is not really a thing yet. OLED has longevity issues, and people expect to keep monitors longer than phones and use computers more heavily than phones, which is why it has been limited to mobile devices so far.

If OLED has longevity issues, then why are there so many OLED TV's? We had (still do) out Samsung Plasma TV for 10 years and never experienced degradation.

The biggest issue I've noticed with large format OLED is the screen burn issues. An LG 4K OLED demo @ JB HiFi Chadstone had screen burns after approximately 30 minutes of being on the same still image. It also developed quite a noticeable yellow patch in the middle section of the screen.

Given that in a multi monitor setup one screen can stay static for ages (RSS feed, music player, VOIP or IM client), OLED's aren't an ideal thing at this stage with the screen burn issue.

Plasma TVs are not OLED. But yes, OLED TVs are already on th market.

I've seen somewhere that the OLED degradation issue can be partially mitigated by using W-OLED pixels covered by a layer of color filter.

Companies just want to milk the most out of IPS technology, much like Intel with their processors.

Hopefully Dell's new monitor will start the ball rolling and convince other manufacturers to release a competing product.

I know that Plasma isn't OLED xD. I am just wondering why they are working backwards in some regards. Probably to force users to buy new $5000 TV's sooner.
