RAID5 vs RAID-Z

Hey guys,

 

Would someone be able to explain to me the benefits of using ZFS vs hardware RAID, specifically RAID5 vs RAID-Z?

With RAID-Z, if you lose your OS that manages the array, can you just reinstall the OS and set up the RAID-Z array without losing data?

And can I set up the RAID-Z array by virtualising a FreeNAS OS off of an unbuntu server installation?
