GTX 980 Underperforming

lplover
Go to solution Solved by ERSCreeper,

I don't think either is an option, really :\

I'll wait for @Nicholas Marzio results before I comment again...looks like it may be ok

Okay so here is my second run result:

515e12cddf.png

This was at max of 83c with the same setting and a CPU of around 100MHz more which is within margin of error.

You gpu looks like it is performing fine.

But either way, if you can afford a new PSU is would recommend it since it isn't a great one.

Some decent PSUs for budget:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-100b10600kr

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/fractal-design-power-supply-fdpsuin3b550w

I don't believe passmark puts enough of a load on the gpu, same with older testing software such as furmark etc.

CPU Benchmarks Tools:

http://www.maxon.net...h/overview.html

GPU Benchmarks Tools:

https://unigine.com/...chmarks/heaven/

https://unigine.com/...nchmarks/valley

All in one:

http://www.futuremar...nchmarks/3dmark

So I was benching my system after upgrading to a new GPU and I noticed that it was severely underperforming. I did all my testing using Passmark's Performance Test and these are the results I got. http://puu.sh/mqlSC/db217c0308.ptx

GPU performance is at some points 50% of what it should be.

My theories is that either my 500W PSU is way too weak, my CPU is too weak or that I'm being stupid and missing something.

Do you guys have any ideas?

Edit: oh, or maybe my OS is just too old?

LOL, not another you need a bazillion watts to power this and that... JUST NO!

No, it isnt.

Notice that I'm running a Xeon E3 1230-v2, not an i7.

That is a minimum wattage on a PSU calc with the wrong processor.

It cant hurt to up it 300w or even 200w

You will see a bump in GPU performance

What are your GPU temps under load?

Maybe it is throttling

ye.. 500w it's written on the psu.. but 350-400 is the reality... soo.. if your cpu uses around 80W, ssd, mobo and other stuf another 50W +/-.. that's maybe 270W +/- for gpu... maybe.. who knows how good is that psu....and maybe its throttling check your temps

Those temps are perfectly fine.

So do I have a defective card?

Except you dont, if you do, then it was another issue independant from the PSU.

Unless you have a super bad PSU, it is 500W Output, but more from the wall, due to lower efficiency.

Will do.

I also have a 980 so I will also download and test to see how close our scores are.

What GPU did you upgrade from?

edit: what OS are you on?

Does the creator of this software state what test rig they use?and please provide your system specs.

Windows 7 64-bit

No they don't hence why I don't recommend using PerformanceTest

I did two benchmarks on Heaven, one was at around 70 degrees, the other at around 75.
