I'm trying to get windows on my flash drive so I can install it on my new computer. I've had several people help me by giving me links and help, but non of it has worked. I have a product key, but I can't find a download, as when I tried to download it from microsoft directly it said The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options. The version is Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I have a link that gives me the ISO, but then when I try to run it, I can only install it on a DVD, and not only do I NOT have a blank DVD, my computer also won't have a DVD reader. And even if I do get the ISO, will my Windows Product Key actually work, seeing as it isn't working here?

Basically, I need a 101 on how to install windows.

For starters, it sounds like you have branded OEM key. In that case, you can't use Microsofts service as that key is supposed to be used with recovery media from brand that its for. If you can get .ISO from another source, you are good to go.

As for .ISO. All of those type of files can be "burned" into USB. I would recommend using Rufus. It worked perfectly me when I made bootable Vista USB. You will need 8Gb USB for that, 4Gb is too small to fit Win7 installer.

THanks for the help. Yes, it says it's an OEM key. You said that if I can get the ISO from somewhere else, it will be ok, so if I do get the ISO, I will be able to install windows, right?

OEM keys are intend to use with one mobo. But there's chance that yours will work again with another mobo. I can't say for sure. Nor can I provide more help on how to get it working (forum rules and Microsofts ToS). If it doesn't work, there's always cheap places like Reddit to get new key.
