For an upcoming Student Congress session I have made a resolution to have schools in the United States contribute to Distributed Computing. Feel free to read and give me some feedback.

NOTE: I know that FLOPS are not an accurate representation of really anything, but it is pretty much the only metric I have to compare between the Pre-Post Delta.

A Resolution to Increase Efforts to Cure Cancers, Other Diseases, and Answer Other Scientific Inquiries Through Distributed Computing (Resolution for ASC DC)

WHEREAS, it has been proven that Distributed Computing (Hereafter DC) in the form of Stanford University's Folding at Home (Hereafter F@H), Rosetta@Home and Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (Hereafter BOINC), etc. has significantly contributed to curing many diseases; and

WHEREAS, http://pande.stanford.edu/papers and [LINK], as well as individual accounts prove that there are significant advancements attributed to DC Programs; and

WHEREAS, technologies in schools sit unused for long periods of time; and

WHEREAS, there is no proof showing that participation in DC Efforts significantly decrease the life of computer hardware (CPU, Motherboard, Memory, Graphics Card); and

WHEREAS, there is approximately 1 computer per 10 students in the US Education System (~8.2 million computers), with an approximate 31 Quadrillion Float Point Operations Per Second (PetaFLOPS) of computing power, higher than the most powerful supercomputer (Titan) (Assuming Core 2 Duo E6600); and

WHEREAS, this contribution will effectively increase the efforts towards these projects by an aggregate of 50%; and

WHEREAS, participation in DC will provide a platform to teach students using real world examples; and

WHEREAS, when newer and more computers are introduced into the school systems the effort will dramatically increase (assuming the number of computers remains constant, changing the average processor to the equivalent of an i5-2400 will triple the computing power to 90 PetaFLOPS); now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, By the Congress here assembled that schools in the United States School System shall use their computers to participate in Distributed Computing Efforts.
