Hi,

At home I have a home server running Server 2012r2 Standard edition. It primary purpose runs a few applications and being a file server. I want to setup a SSTP VPN server on it, however I have tried and failed. All the online guides use Active Directory, which I dont really want or need. Is there a way or guide to setup a SSTP server or is there a 3rd party application I could use. My end Goal is to have a VPN connection that does not require 3rd party software on the clients and can bypass web proxy's (not authenticated ones) and will work through firewalls. The places I want to use it does not block sstp traffic (I have tested with a VPN provider) I want to be able to access internal websites (on the LAN) and also access the SMB shares.

Note: my Internet connection is 100/40mbit fibre connection, it handles VPN connections fine (my router is currently hosting a PPTP VPN Server) and works flawlessly.

That is a bucketload of terminology you got there tongue.png  I personally use VNC, a SSH tunnel and SFTP to manage my home computers & access files remotely.

So your end goal is:

- Access an SMB share at home from anywhere

- Access an internal website from anywhere

For the former I think you'll need to look into a FTPS solution of some sort. For the latter, I would personally use an SSH tunnel.

Speedtests

WiFi - 7ms, 22Mb down, 10Mb up

Ethernet - 6ms, 47.5Mb down, 9.7Mb up

It's completely blown out of proportion. Also if you're the least bit worried about data gathering then you should go live in a cave a 1000Km from the nearest establishment simply because every device and every entity gathers information these days. In the current era privacy is just fallacy and nothing more.

yeah the problem i have is the firewalls, most places i visit only have ports 80 and 443 open and block all traffic except web traffic. (this is also the case at work). the only thing i have managed to get passed the firewall so i can access my FTPS is through a SSTP server i tested. One of the issue with my test SSTP was it was hosted in LA, i live in AUS, the speeds were appalling. I would highly prefer using my own SSTP server, as the amount of hops that the places i visit is literally 2 hops. (iinet --> iinet (my isp is iinet, and so are the places i visit so the traffic never leaves the state or city im in)

Im fairly tech savvy, well I should be I work in IT Support, but this one has me stumped.
