Nvida Drivers after GPU Upgrade

Vacras

Hey,

I've just ordered a MSI GTX 970 Gaming G4 to replace my "old" GTX 660 ti. I've gone for the Nvidia card, because my power supply only delivers 550 Watts and don't want to put in a super power hungry card also I just tend to like Nvidia over AMD and the card was reduced by 50 €, so pls don't kill me for not going R9 390.

So now to my question:

I am currently running the "GeForce Game Ready Driver Version: 361.43" and I would like to know wheter I have to deinstall all the Nvidia drivers before I put the 970 in my PC or if I can just put the card in and it will work just fine with all the drivers still on my SSD.

Thanks for your help

Not necessary but it's recommended to reinstall the driver with DDU. http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

970 power consumption is similar to 660 Ti iirc.

Just to be sure, I would remove the previous drivers and install the latest ones after physically upgrading the GPU.

The drivers may both be nvidia, but the architecture is different. The chances are high that even if the installer download is the same, the drivers that it actually installs and registers are different.

Allright I guess I will reinstall everything then thanks guys.

I think the 970 uses 5 Watts less than my 660 ti :D

I put a 670 in my PC without uninstalling the drivers from my 970 that was removed.

And its fine on my end... proper GPU usage, no stutter or any hiccups.

But then again if I had run into issues, yeah I'd just use DDU + reinstall Nvidia drivers.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

well if some of you are saying that you were fine I will just put in the card and look for any issues, if they occur I will reinstall

if your PSU is half-decent a 390 would have been no problem but yeah. Just insert your card and go

I am running a bequiet! PSU but I do have an I7 920 and it's overclocked so a card like the 390 that draws like 275 Watts is a bit to much for my taste. I don't want to risk anything so I went with Nvidia

970 draws anywhere from 170-200W since GPU Boost 2.0 Auto-OCs

yet it is a lot less than the R9 390. Like I said, I am well aware that the R9 390 is prob better in price per performance, but I do care about power consumption and the 970 was cheaper in the first place

I'd just YOLO the install. If I had issues, I'd remove the old drivers.

Though if the 670 is on the older legacy drivers, it would probably boot you into some nasty VGA mode before it attempts to install new drivers.

The 970 is a perfectly fine card :) I just bought a R9 390 myself, but was seriously considering a 970. I happen to prefer AMD over nvidia for various reasons, but I'm not one to turn down a deal. :D

Same for me ^^, Nvidia fan once, Nvidia fan forever I guess. But I totally get the point of going AMD! :)
