I think it just sits on your desk, kind of like a very small tower. Portable external drives are usually smaller so they can fit in a travel bag.

Usually "desktop" external drives need to be plugged in (to an outlet) with the cord they give you. (unlike portable ones which are powered by the usb cord)

Look at something the size of a 3.5" HDD, and then something else a 2.5" HDD

It should be a bit bigger than the 3.5, so something like 4.5
