I currently own a Acer extensa 5235 with 4gb of ddr3 ram and a celeron 900 and was wondering if there was anything i could upgrade? I already added 2gb of ram from the previous of 1 but its windows 32bit so 3gb usuable. I also have a cooling pad a havit one. I accidentally (when i was young) took the cpu heatsink and fan off repeatedly without cleaning or replacing thermal compound so should i consider a cpu upgrade and thermal compound?

On a 2nd note i would like help regarding my 2nd laptop a Acer aspire e1-572p it has 8gb of ram and a intel 4200u processor and would like to overclock the memory as it would help with the integrated graphics  or even the cpu which is a bottleneck. I do know that its locked both  in bios and the physical proccessor but would like to know if theres anything i could do to add performance.

Im building a pc soon! Got a phanteks enthoo pro 240gb ssd at £40(black friday deal) and optical drive so far.

You cant really upgrade laptops too much. You cant upgrade CPUs, because there soldered into the board and you cant overclock RAM/CPUs at all AFAIK

But there are upgrade routes that i've seen its just that all those recommendations found were made in 2012 and was looking for a more modern approach. The celeron 900 can be upgraded to a t9300 and t9500 according to my research so far and if possible i can unlock the 1 gb of ram if i can update by 32 bit windows professional into a 64bit windows 10 for free. Not sure though i think microsoft will only let me get 32 bit.

Your Extensa is probably as good as you can get, but it is a PGA478 socket so you could theoretically get a better CPU. Buuuut you'd have to find one that is supported by the motherboard. Your other newer laptop is not very upgrade-friendly.

The 4200U is a BGA chip meaning it is soldered like most new laptop setups. Older laptops are much more commonly a PGA or LGA setup meaning they can be removed.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

But could you quote on any upgrades to the old laptop that i could make e.g the best and budget options. From old forums i saw that old core 2 duos could be used as upgrades but was wondering if there was anything newer.

Interesting. I have an ancient laptop and one day I'll see if this is the case for me

Incidentally the older laptop i received for free but its a bit outdated for even browsing i find.  Malware checks and defrags have been done. Im scared that the hdd is broken weird clicking noises i've never heard before. Cpu usuage is maxed at 100% svchost.exe problem. Still can;t find the virus though. Still upgrades would be nice would like to be able to do light gaming.

You should be able to use a T8100 or T8300, possibly a T9300. Stick with 800MHz FSB chips, and double check for BIOS updates before doing an upgrade.

Sorry but i'd like to ask what a fsb is and what it does?  I've been mostly researching  pc stuff and never came across this.

So would you recommend me getting the t9300 for my laptop? Its only £18 and already has a higher clock  and 2 cores over my 1 core celeron 900?

Do some research first. Make sure your laptop actually supports it. Do some searching around for people who have already done the upgrade on your specific model of laptop, not just in general.

Are you asking me to take pictures or give more information regarding the motherboard? Just downloaded cpu-z on it for some data.  the 160gb hdd 5400rpm is quite outdated.

And with the intel 4200u is it possible to overclock with software? It runs cool at load and  with its integrated graphics could do with a bit of overclock.  Can't find any solutions to overclock it as the cpu is locked aswell as the bios.

I would like to increase the performance of both laptops with a small budget.

Bought a used(like new) t9300 for £18 on ebay and artic silver 5 compound as well as isopropyl alcohol to clean the the connecting points of the heatsink and cpu. If there are any good deals for ssds might upgrade them on both laptops minimum 240gb or perhaps sshd.
