so gtx is not the route for a budget?

380 and 380X are faster options, but you should also consider the power consumption and heat of your components. A gtx 960 has very low heat output and power draw and is the best choice for a very small case. If you have a regular case with decent airflow, the amd side offers better value for raw performance.

I recently found out that the way TDP is rated for AMD and Nvidia is different.

While reading an older 7870 review on Guru3D* they explained AMD rates the TDP with the +20% power max you can apply via overdrive so while a 380 is rated at 190W, it realistically only outputs around 160W of heat at stock settings.

Nvidia do this in the opposite way, rating at stock settings without any form of OC in mind. Once you raise the power target and give the 960 that much needed OC, it goes to around 150W

Well still: The 960 mostly uses around 50-70W less power than a 380:

Just some reviews that I randomly collected where they show the higher power draw. Don't get me wrong here. I would still much rather buy a 380 than a 960, but it is pure physics that those extra 50Watts or more will result in more heat. If your cooler can handle that, no problemo. If it can't .....well hot and loud. I know power draw is not equal to TDP, but just assuming both cards have the same efficiency there must be more heat emitted by the 380 or it runs on magic.

Again, I suggest the 380 as well, just for a small system the 960 will most likely (also depending on the cooler) emit less heat.

380 has more stream processors so it's only natural for it to output more heat. Just as efficient, simply more heat-generating transistors.

Theirs a low price on a r9-280 should I still go with the r9-380?

380 is 12% more powerful and is more efficient.

Coolio but I have one question I've been reading on gpu and resolutions, I'm playing on 1680x1050 so would I really need the 4gb version ?

Get 4GB as it's simply more future-proof.

2GB is not enough anymore. 3GB is the bare minimum for high end AAA games.

Alright and thanks for all the help lol you been around a lot

Don't listen, there's no such thing as future proof and there's no point in throwing in the extra pennies for what's a budget card anyway, 2GB will be fine ESPECIALLY at the resolution you play on.
