Contacts Not Showing

I got a Nexus 5X for Christmas, but when I put my sim card in none of my contacts were showing up. I have the option to import them, but I assume that means they'll be stored on the phone and I want them to be stored on the sim card so that I'll have them if I get a new phone. What can I do?

They'll still be on the sim card if you import them I believe, if not I'm sure you can just transfer them back over

 

They are still on the sim card but there's no option for exporting contacts to the sim, so any new ones will just be on the phone.
