For the longest time, running a monitor with a higher than 120hz refresh rate would cause nvidia gpus not to downclock on the desktop. I've been using NVInspector to force my 980ti to downclock when I'm not running 3D applications, but with the latest driver update, this problem seems to have gone away.
Am I crazy or did nvidia finally fix the problem?

I hope so. Running multiple 4K displays causes this problem too. Before the fans on my cards would run up but now on water it's less noticeable.

I think it was in their release notes recently that they did fix this.  Not positive, but I swear I remember reading about it.

Meanwhile I have my cards set to "Max Performance" in NV control panel anyways :)  I hate downclocking.

running a 1440p 144hz and never experienced this problem in the first place. But if you just recently updated your drivers and the problem went away it seems very likely it was a driver specific problem or a corrupted driver problem

Yeah, pretty sure I read something along those lines in one of the latest drivers release. Can't remember which one was it, but I'm sure it happened.

I just wish they fixed the driver crash when opening Media Player Classic......
