Dual Core processor question...

What is the difference, in terms of speed and functionality, between an Intel Core 2 Duo, and an Intel Core i3 or Core i5 that is a Dual Core processor?

core 2 duo is a very old archtecture about 50% of the preformance of a equaly clocked haswell dual core. an i5 is a newer term starting with the i5 550 i think. it has always been a quadcore on desktops and a dual core with hyper threading a turbo on laptops. 

 

dual core processors have 2 cores and tipicly no hyperthreading or turbo boost. so the lowest preformance available.

 

an i3 is newer then a core 2 duo and has 2 cores with hyper threading to have 2 real cores and 2 fake cores for a total of 4 virtual cores.

 

an i5 has 5 real cores with no hyperthreading and has turbo boost.

The main difference on the CPU side is the architecture. The architecture in Sandy, Ivy, Haswell, and Skylake is vastly superior compared to Conroe, Allendale, and Wolfdale.

OK, thanks!  There are people who argue that ANY dual core processor shouldn't exist, because it's the year 2015, etc, etc.  I can see that argument for gaming PCs, but for just internet, email, and doing work on Microsoft Office, I think they're fine.  At my local Office Depot, I was messing around with an HP Stream Notebook, and everything worked just fine, in terms of speed and functionality.
