upgrading hp pavillion

Hey guys,

a friend of mine wants a upgrade. Because he does not understand much on the pc topic side of life, he asked me to help him. His current system is a hp pavillion with an Haswell i3 (I think it is the 4130)and a gt 6xx/7xx "gpu" in it. From what I found out, most of these HP's come with a 300W PSU. At that point i thought that a 750ti will give him a big boost. If I'd upgrade the PSU and the case, I will end up with a 950 or 380 (depending on his budget he gives me). Now my question is: does this 750ti work on the 300W PSU? the i3 needs about 60W + 50W for everything else + 40W the "gpu" what is in there -> the 750ti should work on this PSU right?

How would you upgrade if he wants to spend a bit more ~200-300€ (Germany)?

He plays most of the time games on it, due to the limit of his graphics accelerator mostly older titles. He wants play GTA IV + V and some other newer titles.

Thanks in advance!

HP psu's are shit from what I have seen, it may say 300W but it probably outputs about 220W or less even, I would definitely go with a new PSU, although if you got a 950, I suppose its possible to fit that in with the psu since the 900 series takes less power, but I would not recommend it.

edit: NVM I was wrong, the 950 takes 90W but its minimum system req. is 350W

my guess is that the psu doesn't even have a 6Pin for the gpu so in this case i'd go with a new psu. Is it worth it even when sticking to the 750ti?

Yeah I would say its still worth it, the 750ti will give a large boost in performance over the current 600/700 card that HP includes, which is usually a very low end model. A PSU and case will probably set you back around $80-90, so with the 750ti its not a huge investment but will add a large amount of performance.

I guess it is, don't have the exact model number but from the size it should be mATX

I would get these

https://jet.com/product/Rosewill-Computer-Case-RANGER-M-Micro-ATX-Mini-Tower-Dual-Fan/e6c1c480602b437495268efaf41c4fff

https://jet.com/product/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-950-Graphic-Card-115-GHz-Core-134-GHz-Boost-Clock-2-GB-GDDR5-PC/ddbb5885497d44bdaab4464077e4b04b

there is a 15% discount for your first order with code 15NOW (max discount $50), plus an additional 10% off when you use Apple Pay (that offer is today only)(max discount 30)

so that would come out to be 137.33 if you pay with a debit card and waive free return, then you can get a PSU and your in business, or you could get a 750 TI with the discount and be good too

Thanks for that suggestion, but I'm from outside the US so this offer didn't had any advantage for me + I don't have a fixed plan from my friend what he wants to do. But thanks for your effort! I'll take a look whether I can get it here in Germany!
