So I salvaged my ram out of two older computers. I got very lucky and found 4gigs DDR3 of the exact same model in each, but they don't have heat spreaders! Unfortunately I've noticed that when I run my computer the ram gets pretty hot. I haven't measured it with a thermometer but It feels like it might burn my hand if I left it there. The computer seems to run fine, and it doesn't seem like the ram is failing at all, but would it be worth it to buy some heatspreaders? On one hand I'd prefer not to have to buy more dimms because I cheaped out on the heat spreaders, but on the other hand I've heard that they don't really do anything...

Don't do drugs. Do hugs!

I personally wouldn't do it if I didn't have a windowed case. Otherwise, maybe. Depends on how much free money you have.

See if you can salvage any small pieces of metal, and DIY some heat spreaders.

If you cover the whole metal piece with thermal pads, there should not be any electrical issues, since they are not thermally conductive.

I just got a spare $30 from a sale, so I'm trying to figure out what to spend it on. Figured I would solve problems like this with my build before adding fancy LED's and shit.

I only have one case fan, would that be the problem? Would it be smarter to invest in more fans?

Ya, even cheapies will do, such as the fans antec sell with switchable speeds

Definitely get another fan. Don't go crazy and fill all the slots. Get one fan blowing air in from the front and have one blowing air out the back. You probably won't need more than that unless you're overclocking. If you do, then add fans slowly. Go for the fewest fans you need to keep the system running at acceptable temps.

As for the heat spreaders, unless you care about the looks you don't need them. Electricity running through anything will produce heat, that's normal. I seriously doubt the ram is running hotter than it should be. The extra fan will help with air flow which will ensure that the ram won't overheat.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB
