Headphone Audio quality

So I have a creative fatal1ty HS800 gaming headset. It has served me well for over a year but one day when I plugged it in the audio quality was utterly awful. The only way I could get the audio quality to be good was to not put any strain on the connector. but today the audio quality is almost always awful. It goes normal for a split second, then reverts back to the terrible quality. Any ideas on how to fix it? The quality is so bad you can't hear people speak, just a garbled mess

Do other headphones work? If so, could be an issue with the cable on your headphones.  If not, then it's a problem with your motherboard's built in sound card.
