What is this used for?

What the hell is this thing? Its in the back of my motherboard and my graphics card. I see where the end on the left plugs into but I can not find on any monitor or anything for the other end. You guys know please fill me in with all the info on this. is it better than hdmi should I use it if I can. Thanks!

that looks like a display port to thunderbolt
