Im thinking about using the Pentium G3258 in a minecraft server rig using Win 10 as an os. Will that be a good idea?

It depends on what you want to do, if you're going to run a vanilla server with upto 20 people it would do fine, but don't hope for a miracle if you want to run FTB or Tekkit with a lot of people, if you have more then 10 on either of those I would expect lag. If you had less then 10 I imagine it would be tolerable.

Ram also plays into account, not so much with a vanilla server but when you start using intensive mods and plugins, and have lots of players. The more memory the better.

There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Just some helpful stuff: You're - You are, Your - Your car, They're - They are, Their - Their car, There - Over there.

If your running for something for just a few of your friends to play Vannila or one of the Lighter FTB packs. Then you would be fine. If you want to play a heavier FTB pack or run a professional server with 100's of people. Grab some Xeons a server Motherboard and lots of ram.

Honestly if you're just going to run a minecraft server, I wouldn't waste the money or system resources on Win10.  You'd probably be better off just running a lightweight Linux distro, and running it off of that.  It's relatively easy to do, and I'm pretty sure it runs right in the terminal.

I'll bre running the Yogscast pack which contains about 251 mods and it will probably be for about 10 of my friends. If i went with a Xeon it would be the e3 1230 v5 on the 1151 platform.

The e3 1230 has 4 cores and 8 threads I believe. So you will be fine. Just make sure to get like 16gb of ram maybe even 32. I don't know much about servers tbh.

You might just want to jump to the Xeon, Avoid any hassle any headaches. 16GBs of ram would be plenty, if you wanted to get more then why not. Just make sure you allow the server to use it haha

+Rep to the make sure you let the server use the ram. (Personal experience)

Ok right now im hosting it off of my personal pc and those specs are on my profile, so I think 16 would be enough just wast sure on the processor. Didn't want to have any over kill. Also any mobo suggestions?

You could go with a Super Micro board and a Skylake Xeon and overclock it too, same option and not much money.

I think the 2 core would be fine too though, I actually just built me one this week.

With that amount of mods tho? And super-micro seems a little sketchy but i doubt any gaming board would take it well.

The SuperMicro you can overclock the locked Xeons though. But its going to run you almost 200 more and you have a nitch product not something as easy or simple to OC as one that is meant for that. You have the option for the cheap unlocked G3258, I honestly think that would probably fit the bill if you want a nice looking budget one. I built mine with asthetics as much as cost as a consideration and was still able to build it for $600.

I would actually buy a used workstation if you want an overkill build with more cores and lots of ram. If interested I will PM you the link.

definitely send me the link, not to budget conscious but dont need to spend an ungodly amount. want something that will perform as i progress and add more servers to the rig.
