weird oc'ing behaviour (gpu)

19_blackie_73

Hey guys,

i tried to oc my gpu (gigabyte gtx 970 gaming g1) but what it does when oc'ed it decreases the performance and i get more inconsitent frametimes. I only increased the core clock by 140 MHz  (at least stable during the gta v benchmark and a little valley test run with that oc 1 month ago) and ramped up the power limit in afterburner. So i effectively get 1507 MHz on core. Within the gta v benchmark it decreased the avg fps by 2 or 3. Can anybody explain the phenomena? Also while rendering via gpu it is not getting faster.  rig is in the sig.

Thanks in advance!

PS: can anybody explain why i can't ramp up the shadow distance in gta v? the slide bar

2 or 3 fps?
Seems like that could be margin of error.

When (at least my) gtx 970's hit their power limit they throttle down to the point that they use several % below the power limit to give them more head room. After this they slowly turbo up again untill they hit it and throttle down again.

This causes the GPU frequency to fluctuate and possibly give a lower average speed.

Someone once said: "Having a rollercoaster on a PC would be epic"

So threw a rollercoaster on my K'nex PC: Project Dragon Khan- K'nex rollercoaster PC build

did you check your temp??

temps are fine, chilling at 60°C

that's the point - jayztwocents achieved in his videos between 5 and 10 fps MORE when overclocked, i achieve less than without oc. with a clock speed >1500 i should get way better fps shouldn't I?

I'd re-install drivers (use the clean install tickbox method the nvidia installer gives you) and retest your overclocks.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

i'll give it a shot.

btw which voltage did you need for 1550MHz?

^ I went to the 970 owners club thread and @Gofspar the mad genius helps us out... Modded my bios to 1.275v and 1.3v to test. (Stuck with 1.275v as 1.3v gave no more anyway)

With stock bios + 0.87v added I could get 1490Mhz, with the mod, pushing a little further voltage, I got 1585Mhz, but set 1550Mhz due to wanting more stability.

bumping up the voltage doesn't change anything... could there be something bad about this card?

That tells me nothing...

How did you OC, what was your method....?

More info required on how you tried plz.?

For all:

I used MSI Afterburner. About a month ago i was interested in how well my card overclocks, so i downloaded valley benchmark and started turning up the core clock in 50MHz steps. I didn't know how to unlock voltage and thought that it would be enough to know which was the last stable oc without bumping up the voltage. I ran a valley run stock (about 56 fps) @1367 MHz and increased then the clock in 50 MHz increments. Because valley crashed @+150Mhz, i settled at +140MHz, ran the benchmark again and got only about 60fps. Then I also tried to OC the memory, but when I ran valley again, it actually decreased performance a lot. So i reset the memory OC and went only with the 1507 MHz on core. Then i opened Blender and tested, what the actual benefit in rendering times will be with that oc. I found out that it was about 10%. Since that was only for testing purpose, i reset the OC to 0 and went stock since then.

Yesterday, I wanted to try again and comparing it to a 780 oc from a friend of mine. I ramped the core clock again to 1507, but the improvement was not noticeable anymore. Also when i tried to run valley with a oc, it said that valley was even able to load the benchmark. Then i tried to oc with OC Guru II, but that didn't change anything so i switched back to afterburner. Messing with the core voltage only slowed render times down, even on stock speeds. I also ran the gta v benchmark tool with the results from above.

As it runs fine on stock settings, it's not that big of a problem, but i would like to know what's wrong with it. BTW i'm running win 8.1 (NO i don't upgrade soon)
