Water or air? new rig

Hi,

I know there is a lot of information about this but I want your opinion.

I'll maybe (probably) built my first PC for myself in the Christmas vacation. (I've built some pc's before)

I'll be getting an I7 6700k I really want to take water cooling because it looks nice and so that there isn't a really big air cooler in my case.

But do you guys think that it is worth it? And if so can you recommend me one? I wanted to buy a corsair (because they look good IMO) 240/280 but maybe a 120/140 is enough for the I7 6700k? (I'm going to overclock) I don't know anything about cooling :)

(I'm from Belgium so my English isn't very good :/)

hi i have the 6700k and i think a water cooler is worth it for the astetics but i would rather buy a air cooler becouse it is cheaper

and performs about the same

 

you are talking about aios right?

Yes :) and I know it's cheaper but I really really like water cooling but van you give me a good reason to use air? (Not price)

Well one reason is that it is not any risk but with a watercooler it can leak and destroy youre computers but that is a very small chance and my dad watercools and have no problem

 

reason number 2: shorter life becouse the pumps only lasts like 2-3 years and with air the one thing that can fail is a $5 fan

reason number 3: they are noisier than air cooling becouse of the pump

reason number 4: they are bigger and my dad culd not fitt it where it should have been

1: yes that's true but corsair tends to replace damaged parts

Shorter life: 5 year warranty

Noisier: yeah that's true

4 yes

I don't know it's a hard choice :/

So let me ask a different question: if I would take a water cooler what size do you think I need? 120,140,240 (don't think about the case but only about the heat output of an overclocked I7)

I seriously have no idea :/

my dad uses a coolermaster nepton 240m 120mm x 2 and his temperatures can reach 80c when overclocked to 4.4ghz and i think that is wrong becouse i do much better

in a air cooled amd that consumes more power and have more tdp and is overclocked to 1.6 volt and 4.7 GHz and does 64c with a maximum of 75 so i dont know whats up with that. if you have 140mm fan support in youre case i would go for that and not the 240 becouse it is ridiculusy large for a watercooling system

and are you going for a dual fan radiator or single? they dont have that much diffrence in temperatures becouce the singel have a thicker radiator.

That v8 gts is really nice but it I read some reviews about it and they said that it's really noisy.

Yeah those temps are high :/ What cooler do you have?

I7 6700k I already said that ;)

So just liquid cooling the CPU? If so, just an H100i or an H80i will do.

Just get a AIO cooler for the CPU and when you own your own house then make an amazing custom loop as it is a hassle but having 38C load temps Over Clocked is amazing

If water probably Corsair h100i GTX (but that will be double the price because if I buy that one I need to replace the fans because a lot of people say that they are noisy :/

H110GTX or the h100I GTX as they're one of the number one aio's out there. I don't know why people complain about pump noise, as mine is silent. My oc'd 5820k doesn't get above 65C ever.

my dad uses a coolermaster nepton 240m 120mm x 2 and his temperatures can reach 80c when overclocked to 4.4ghz and i think that is wrong becouse i do much better

in a air cooled amd that consumes more power and have more tdp and is overclocked to 1.6 volt and 4.7 GHz and does 64c with a maximum of 75 so i dont know whats up with that. if you have 140mm fan support in youre case i would go for that and not the 240 becouse it is ridiculusy large for a watercooling system

and are you going for a dual fan radiator or single? they dont have that much diffrence in temperatures becouce the singel have a thicker radiator.

Those numbers are absolute garbage, did your dad take off the plastic in between the cpu and cooling plate, and did he put thermal paste in?

I'll probably never do a custom loop it's to much hassle and it's pretty expensive :)

I would always get the bigger rad if your case can accommodate it / your budget can.  One thing I wanted to mention was someone mentioned water cooling takes more space... what?? Are you insane?  In order to get performance that is ALMOST as good as a water AIO, you need a dual tower cooler like a NH-D14, and that thing is massive. An AIO is a small CPU block and one rad you can mount on the top of your case. 

 

FWIW, I've had a corsair representative themselves respond to me on these forums and tell me they'll replace any parts I have damaged by one of their coolers failing, if it happens at all.

Yes :) and I know it's cheaper but I really really like water cooling but van you give me a good reason to use air? (Not price)

 

 

Well one reason is that it is not any risk but with a watercooler it can leak and destroy youre computers but that is a very small chance and my dad watercools and have no problem

 

reason number 2: shorter life becouse the pumps only lasts like 2-3 years and with air the one thing that can fail is a $5 fan

reason number 3: they are noisier than air cooling becouse of the pump

reason number 4: they are bigger and my dad culd not fitt it where it should have been

Those are serviceable parts, you need to check seals, that isn't a normal AIO, normal AIO's have crimped fittings and hoses to

Prevent leaking. The blocks are tested, and if you go corsair, they'll replace your parts.

Yeah that's where Corsair is awesome. But its just one of those things that has to be mentioned. Even if it is becoming more rare.
