After the recent LTT video of using old server parts to build an 8-core gaming rig, I thought if I would do something similar in order to accomplish a few different tasks. I am only in the planning phase but am considering using this as a combination NAS, minecraft server, running virtual machines, and learning some other things. To say this would be a "daily use" computer would be wrong, its more for utility use and to further my knowledge overall. That being said, I am aiming to keep it at a realistic price point and utilize parts that will afford me the option to do many different things.

Current parts I am looking into:

CPU: Xeon Hex Core x5660/Xeon E5450

MOBO: Intel S5000 boards

I feel those two parts are going to be the limiting pieces overall and are the primary issue right now

If anyone has any advice or suggestions please post, or any similar projects you are working on. I;d enjoy to see if others got interested after this video

It's certainly doable, the other low cost option for that would be a haswell i3 build, it has ECC support as well.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Ive considered that avenue. I think it would be interesting though to have a bit of a project and a greater number of cores to play around with. Will definitely consider though
