So, I was poking around in the inside of my PC when I noticed there was an uncomfortable amount of dust. What would be the easiest method of removal and are there any steps I could take to prevent further dust buildup?

Put an air purifier in the room as the first method of collecting dust. Put some dust linings in your computers fan areas to help.

for removal, unplug everything and move it outside, then get some canned air from a walmart or staples

blow everything out, then pull everything apart and blow it all out again

Periodically vacuum clean the system whilst it is turned off, plug connected to the wall so it is grounded. Hold the fan fins still whilst the nozzle is close to prevent them being damaged (spinning too fast.)

I do this every 3rd month with my system just to ensure it doesn't get too bad.

Please do not vacuum your PC. It could cause static and fry your junk.
Use a can of air. You can find it at wallmart, best buy, staples, office max, or even the hardware store.
