The movies are the original stories, any books are fan made and part of the expanded universe.

I really wouldn't recommend them. Star Wars literature (esp EU) is quite honestly garbage. Terribly written fiction.

Here is the cannon list... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_books#Star_Wars:_Canon

I would highly recommend a series like "The Malazan Book of the Fallen" instead if you'd like a good read.

If you want to read some good Star Wars EU books, start with Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy.  It's not going to be part of the canon as Disney has discarded about 99% of all EU materials.  I hope Disney decides to bring Admiral Thrawn into the canon somehow, in future movies, but currently he is not part of official canon.

There are also quite a number of bad SWEU books, if you're not sure just ask.  For example, the Courtship of Princess Leia is one of the worst to read.  But it was the book that introduced the Nightsisters and the witches of the planet Dathomir, which is part of the canon for Clone Wars and the period between Revenge of the Sith and New Hope.

Though on a quick note, the planet Coruscant which is home to the Old Republic government, the senate and the Jedi Council was never given a name in the original movie trilogy.  The person who gave the name to the planet was Timothy Zahn in his Thrawn Trilogy, and George Lucas made that name canon.

Thrawn is arguably my No.1 or No.2 favorite character in the entire Star Wars franchise.
