Hi guys,

Me and a friend of mine had this Intel core e7400 which we wanted to OC. It was in an old stock dell pc so there weren't much OC-options.

We read some stuff about BSEL-modding and as we don't really care for the processor we decided to just try it out.

I was a bit sceptical of the whole process but as a matter of fact; it worked!

Our dual core processor now runs 3.4ish-Ghz instead of 2.8 , some nice results if you ask me.

Now we've got some benchmarks running, all is looking good but we want to write a school project on this OC.

We can compare the benchmark scores of before and after, sure, but the problem is that we really only have a vague idea of how this mod works.

Pretty much every site on BSEL-modding online just says the mod "tricks" your mobo into thinking it runs at a higher clock speed, but for our project we need a little more detailed information than this.

I suppose this is quite a complicated subject so every bit of information is very welcome.

Oh btw, we did the tape mod, so we didnt connect 2 pins, we just taped one off.

Our questions then:

1) How does taping off a processor pin affect the clock speed? (A more extensive explanation than: "it tricks the mobo" would be awesome ^^)

2) Is there anywhere we can find the functions of all different pins?

3) In case this is too complicated of a question; Who should we ask for more explanation on the subject?

Cheers guys.

~Jonas

Welcome to the Forums!

It wasn't an uncommon practice back in the day where overclocking required a physical hardware mod to give it more voltage or to trick the motherboard to give a higher clock rate. As of currently I haven't seen it done on anything modern for a while, pinouts of diagrams of sockets can be found online but the accuracy of those diagrams is a different story.
