Half Headset Thingy

So this Christmas my dad asked me to get him a headset for him to use while at work. He is constantly on extended phone calls with clients and thinks that being able to put his phone down without turning speaker phone on is a necessity. However he asked for one of those half headset thingies with only one ear-phone on it so that he can still hear the rest of his office while on a call. So what are your guys' recommendations? If you need more details feel free to asks!

Recommendation #1: put one earcup behind his hear

Recommendation #2: chop one of the earphones off a headset

I have one of these at work and it's good enough IMHO. I'm assuming this is for a desk phone, not a cell. I don't think it works with cell phones.
