Well Christmas is almost here, and of course I don't have money for PC parts so I'm hoping my parents will hook me up. I've kept my grades good this semester and all, so they shouldn't mind getting me one of the things on the list:

850 EVO 500GB + Steam Controller (I play a lot of DiRT Rally, so the gyro should be able to help a lot, and I really need an SSD) - Around $200

-or-

Logitech G27 (I used my friends, and man do I love this thing. I would like it but I feel like I need upgrades in my rig first) - Around $220

-or-

Just some money, like $100-200 so I can upgrade my 290 to a 390. (Is it even worth the upgrade from my reference cooled 290?)

-or-

Based on my specs in my signature, what would you do? Let me know down below. Thanks!

R9 290 is nearly just as good as the 390 so no, not worth an upgrade.

Upgrade the CPU to an i5-4460. Maybe the power supply as well. And add a 120GB SSD for OS.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

If you haven't got an SSD yet, I'd totally go for the first choice

My Rig - Intel I7-5820k@ 4ghz| Rampage V Extreme| 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4|RTX 2060 SUPER| Corsair 650D| Corsair HX750| 2TB Samsung 850 EVO| H100i| 3x SF-120's| 1x 240 cooler master Red LED Front intake

Everything I say defaults to include /s

You wouldn't be able to afford a cpu upgrade to an I5 unless you go used, don't upgrade the gpu just get a different cooler on it, save rest for 250gb ssd?

New CPU? I want to get a Xeon E3-1231v3, and my stock cooler is fine since I don't want to OC. Gets plenty of airflow actually, one of the more cooler parts in my rig. My i3 is holding up just fine though, maybe in ARMA is the only thing I can think of.

And the PSU is fine, I love it actually. Just got it and it holds my 290's OC very well.

If you don't already have an SSD, get the SSD.

I know how fast an SSD is, I unfortunately had to sell my 840 Pro 512GB to my friend because I wanted my 290 so bad. I think the HDD really is the limiting factor in my rig right now.

Agreed. The i3 is holding your GPU back.

So CPU or SSD?

Why would you even get a 450W PSU in the first place?

Have you seen the one I had before?

It was an EVGA 400W that wasn't even 80+, and my 290 drew so much power from it that it couldn't power two HDDs if I wanted to copy something. This one works great and provides plenty of power for my 290, people overestimate how much wattage they really need.

Think about it, I have an mITX rig, what else can I put in here that will significantly increase the power draw? I already have one of the hottest running cards on the planet.

Go for the SSD but if I were you I would ask for one a little less expensive unless your parents are really going to spend THAT MUCH on a gift just for you....

if it was a gift that the whole family could enjoy, that would be one thing. But this is just for you. Ask for money would be my choice. Money to save to get yourself the SSD.

My parents have good jobs, they shouldn't mind. They gave my siblings a lot more last year because they 'had higher grades than me' (even though I take college courses).

I can ask for just the SSD then, that would only be $150.

Get a cheapish SSD for your boot drive and see how much you have left over for a new CPU

My vote goes towards the new SSD. After using my dad's laptop with an HDD for a little bit, I can honestly say I wanted to break that thing for how slow it was.

Intel Core i7-5820K (4.4 GHz) | Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB  | 2x 360mm Custom Loop (Noctua iPPC) | ASRock X99 Extreme6 | Samsung 840 EVO 250GB | Fractal Design Define S | Corsair HX750 | Windows 10 | Corsair M65 RGB PRO | Corsair K70 RGB LUX (CherryMX Brown) | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro & Creative Sound Blaster Z | Nexus 6P (32GB Aluminium) | Check out my setup: Project Kalte Here!

If your goal is an overall faster system, get an SSD. If you want game performance that actually reflects the power of your 290, get a new CPU. Which are you more interested in?

You can get a 120gb SSD for around $50, which would be plenty for your OS and common programs. I would get rid of the bottleneck first and then get the SSD later. 50 bucks isn't much money anyway. But, that's just me.

Correct, and you can pay only $70-80 for a good quality 240GB SSD.
