Benchmarking Drive Performance

vanished

I just thought of something: a lot of anti-virus programs run in a way where they scan all files that are written/read/etc in some capacity or another.  This would introduce a wildcard into any kind of performance test, would it not?  For that reason, should disk benchmarking always be done with AV turned off?

If it does have an affect, what it is?  I got thinking about this too; would it be:

  • No affect up to a certain speed, at which the CPU becomes a bottleneck and nothing can transfer faster than that speed as a result, or
  • A slight performance hit in all scenarios, by a certain amount (X MB/s slower), or
  • A slight performance hit in all scenarios, by a percentage (X% slower), or
  • something else?

What do you guys think?  What is the common wisdom say?

Real world benchmarking should be done in a way that corresponds to the average user. Not the best case scenario.

Agreed.  Well, actually I would like to see both numbers just out of curiosity for how the drive can really perform, but yeah I would also want to know what numbers to expect.

But would AV affect this?
