Hi just finished building a pc for my brother. It's running a 3770k on a maximus v extreme, with 8gb of ram, at stock levels

At idle the cores seem to be averaging 45degrees, which seems quite a lot, but as soon as I start running the Prime95 Stress test the temps shoot up to 105degrees!

Anyone know what might cause these, the thermal paste is arctic silver 5.  Is this just due to a bad chip or due to other factors?

Probably too much Thermal Paste, Try reapplying? if u used a stock heatsink with preapplied Thermal Paste, you may picked up a defective chip?

What is the stock voltage on your chip? maybe there is some issue

You never said what cooler you were using. And your idle temps don't really matter don't worry about those. As for your load temps if you are using the stock cooler then that's probably why. Just don't run prime or IBT or anything on a stock cooler. What are your gaming temps.

Hello! The stock cooler should not cause temperatures that high. Follow these videos to see if you put the cooler/thermal paste on correctly:

Thermal paste:

Intel Cooler:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcQgZX-4W0o

If you follow these correctly the CPU temperatures should fall down to acceptable levels.

Maybe try it a few different times to make sure. Also check to see if all the pins on the stock cooler are straight, if installed improperly they can get bent and cause a bad contact between the CPU and heatsink.

If the temperatures remain high, I suggest that you contact Intel for a replacement CPU or contact your retailer.

You can contact Intel from the following link, just enter your region, product, and problem. http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/contactsupport

That's a little worrying my flatmates 3570 (non k) hits maybe 75 with the Intel burnin software using the stock cooler.
