I wouldn't risk a new rig on a used PSU. That's the bloodline of the entire system, if that poops, you'll get in big trouble.

Is buying a used power supply worth saving some money on ? Or I should stay on the safe side a buy a new one for a extra $50.

A power supply is actually pretty cheap compared to other parts new. Get a new PSU. It's safer. Also, make sure it is 80+ certified. That will make sure that it is designed to use more evergy as power instead of waisting it as heat. Also, you don't need a 1000 watt psu. 500 watts is for most PC's is a great amount. If you have a more powerful GPU that uses more energy you may want to go higher. You want 1/3 to 1/2 more wattage then you need.
