So I have a Alphacool D5 pump for my custom watercool loop, and I have no idea where to plug it in, to power it.

I know that I can plug that 3 pin into my CPU fan header... but there were lots of posts about using the molex cable instead, since the pump just needs a steady stream of power.. it doesn't need to be adjusted, like an actual CPU fan.

Now.. I have no idea where I plug that into... so with the cables that came with my power supply, I have a power supply to a molex. So do I plug it straight into the power supply? I also have a 4pin to molex cable, but.. I'm not sure if I plug that into the CPU fan header. Lots of other mobo's have a power header, where it doesn't change the voltage, unlike the CPU fan header... but I don't think I have that? I have a Asus X79 Deluxe for my motherboard.

Sorry for this newbie question, this'll be my first custom water cooling loop, so I'm confused about things.

Oh and I already bleeded the system, I just don't know where to plug it in after that...

Thanks guys!

The small one looks like it could plug into a fan header, while the larger one is a molex connect that could plug into your PSU via a cable.  I'd use the molex if I were you.

Though I wonder if the 4pin to molex connector (assuming that the 4pin side is like fan connector), if plugged into a fan header could be used to control the speed of the pump.

The 4-pin connector plugs into a coresponding plug on your power supply. The 3-pin connector with the single wire plugs into a fan header on the mainboard so you can monitor the RPM of the pump. Useful if the pump dies or stops spinning for some reason, as your system can be set up to immediately shut down if that occurs before temperatures have a chance to spike.

use both. THe fan one is just to monitor RPM of the pump
