Hello party people.

For some reason, a while back, my brother thought his HD7870 died. I don't remember what it was, I did however agree that it might've been the case based on the symptoms. He then bought a msi R7 370 to replace it. When it arrived I tried installing it for him, but the card seemd to be a dud, so we sent it back. They claim it's working and sent it back, so now I need to find the real source of the problems...

The relevant specs are as following:

PSU: Chieftec BPS-650C

Motherboard: msi H61MU-E35 (B3)

Besides that, there's nothing really drawing a lot of power from the system. There's one or two case fans, a single hdd and an optical drive.

So. The 7870 uses two 6 pin plugs and works just fine. When I swap it for the R7 370, which uses one 6 pin plug, the system won't boot. The system powers on, even the fancy msi light on the GPU and the fans on it are working, but no boot. If I leave the card in, but unplug the 6 pin it boots. This leads me to believe it might be a power issue, but the 7870 should require more power, and is working just fine.

Oh, and last time around I updated the BIOS to the last update that supports whatever CPU that's in it.

Could there be some sort of a compatability issue between the old motherboard and the new GPU, or is it more likely to be power related?

Or, in layman's terms: wtf is wrong, HALP! plz!

yeah im going to say its a power issue , if its posting without the power plugged into the GPU then yeah power issue

get a new power supply , 500-600w from a decent brand , EVGA etc

EDIT : and as far as compatibility goes it posts with the card in so it does work , my bet is power issue

The PSU is as stated a Chieftec BPS-650C.

I took the R7 back to my place and plugged it in to my computer, which is slightly newer but with similar specs. I was confused at first, since it didn't perform as well as my OC 7850, but turns out the OC software I use set the clockspeed down to 50% for some reason. After fixing that, I have confirmed the functionality of the card on a simliar platform. So, I suspect the culprit to be the PSU.

I guess I'll have to pull the PSU out of my rig and test it in his', as I don't have too many PSUs laying around (none infact). At this point I hate the fact that I didn't opt for a modular PSU...

I'll update when I get this done!

Bought a brand new Corsair CX750M, way more than what is needed, but it was about 5 bucks more than a 550, so why not..

The problem is still very much there, no notable changes with the new PSU. All power cables has been replaced.

I forgot to mention that the computer boots straight to BIOS, even if I tell it not to. It has done this for quite some time. Might this be an indication of a faulty mobo?

At this point I'm getting really confused. I know the GPU works, the PSU should work as it's brand new, the old GPU works just fine in the system... What am I missing?

The cpu is an i5-2310 if that bit of information might be helpful.

Also, his old GPU was a 6870, not a 7870, my bad!

So you had a bad PSU and you bought a slightly less bad PSU. Geegee. Have you got the power connectors seated properly everywhere?

Looks like a motherboard issue to me.

Honestly not sure what you can do besides try the cpu in a different motherboard (if you can find one with that socket), or visa versa (new cpu same mobo)

Other than that, I have no idea

Hope I was helpful lol

Everything is as it should be, I've even plugged it into a different outlet to see if that made a difference, which it didn't.

The fans start spinning on the GPU when it's plugged in, so I assume it's powerded.

It worked with the cheap 750w PSU in my system, the 6870 which is a more power hungry card works fine in the system as it was, so I'm starting to thing it might not be a power issue. Problem then is, what's causing it?

Starting to lean towards this myself. It's 1155 so sourcing a new mobo for it isn't easy, and the only other 1155 I've got is the one in my own system..

This leads to the question: Can such a problem be a faulty CPU or is it more likely to be the mobo?

Might just have to sell my own mobo and cpu to him so I get a good excuse for upgrading :P

To be honest Im not sure. Not quite my level of expertise

New development!

I put the 6870 back so he'll have a working computer. Everything was just dandy. Suddenly it wouldn't output any video after a restart. I switched to the internal graphics, which worked. Restarted, not even output from the internal graphics. And yes, it did boot. Restarted it a few times, and back to normal I thought. Seems like it wouldnt output video from the 6870 if it booted straight to BIOS.

Oh yeah, I figured out what caused the computer to boot straight to BIOS: the logitech g110 keyboard, for some odd reason. If I unplugged it, the 6870 would output, but not if it went to BIOS.. If I booted to bios using the internal graphics and then switched the cables over to the GPU upon getting to the login screen, it worked.. After a few more restarts it's back to normal, and the GPU outputs even when booted to BIOS..

Something's dying...
