I read something on Wikipedia that it was disabled for Haswell CPU's. It is not available on i3/i5/i7, but Ark says it's available for e3. Is it still available for e3 or is it disabled like the rest?

But first, let's talk about parallel universes.

It is enabled on Xeon E3' s, but I believe there is a bug that won't be fixed until Broadwell-E. Some firmware issue I think? I'll look into it...

EDIT: You might need a micro patch for it. It is labeled as "microcode.dat". It is unlikely you'll find the proper one for your CPU; many are having issues with this.

Micro patch?

TSX can be re-enabled through the BIOS/firmware menu should the motherboard manufacturer decide to expose it to the user. A micro patch could be required for such function.

I looked on Ark. It has updates for Linux, but not for Windows and Mac.

Would it be worth buying an e3 just for TSX-NI, or would it be smarter to buy an i7?

I do some compiling and video editing once in a while, mostly playing games... TSX-NI can be useful for multi-threading, since it doesn't have a core block another core, but...

Are these micropatches done by BIOS updates via the manufacturer? If so, then I guess it's not much of an issue... (as long as it gets fixed)

They are typically done through BIOS updates. I think an i7 would be fine, though... If it's not that much of a concern?

An i7 would be cheaper as of right now, but it lacks that TSX-NI support, which supposedly makes multi-threading a lot faster by allowing all CPU's to work at once without causing one to block another by RAM access... I guess this would make compiling and rendering faster, right? Might make games faster too, but that kind of depends on their multi-threading...

Are you planning an X99, Z170, or Z97 build with an i7?

Z170 scores lower than Haswell cores.

X99 would be the best for editing and rendering, but its expensive.

Z97 is capable of doing everything, from server use to personal use.

I'm choosing between a 4790 and a e3-1246. Maybe 4790k, maybe e3-1276.

Can you do a 6700K or 5820K build? The DDR4 RAM support is a plus. I'd recommend the 5820K build because plus two cores.

I do recording too, quick sync would be better than two extra cores, since it's not affecting much performance...

2 cores/4 threads more is nice and all, but that won't alleviate any lag coming from H.264 encoding, will it? It will be spread out more, but games using the first couple of cores could have their FPS lowered quite a bit...

Haha, $300 for ram?

I would barely pay $100 for 16gb in quad

I'm not doing 4k, it's 720/1080

Id much rather spend the money on a sound card.

Edit: I think I'd rather give up on skylake, it's overpriced to hell. It performs worse than a 4790k but only slightly, and costs $120 more.

5820k, 4790k, 4790, or e3-1246

I may do 5820k if you know of any decent h.264 encoders that don't cost a fortune ($120+)
