System upgrade

Go to solution Solved by Dabombinable,

Thank you for the answer, that's what I will be doing, but I still can't find anywhere if the mother board supports the x5470 cpus.

If I can get confirmation that they will work I'll be ordering 2 of them asap

Hey guys,

I currently have a hp xw8400 (i know it's like 7-8 years old and should get a new one) with the following specs:

- intel 5000 series motherboard with two cpu sockets

- 800w power suply

- 2x Xeon 5150 dual core cpus 2.66ghz

- 8gb ram

- 147gb sas 10.000 rpm drive

- gigabyte r9 280x oc windforce x3 3gb 384bit

The first upgrade will be an ssd, but other than that I guess I will need to change the cpus to play the latest games, right?

Any sugestions for some lga771 socket cpus I could get?

Ohh and PS: getting a newer system right now isn't a possibility, any ideas what I could do with this one?

I believe only Xeon CPUs work with socket 771. All the C2D, and C2Q are LGA 775.

Xeon X5470 with the BSEL mod so they run at 4GHz are the best choice.

Thank you very much for the fast answer, I see I can get two of those for about 120$ on ebay, could you plaese recommend me a tutorial for BSEL mod on this type of processors? I can't seem to find anything specific on it.

Ohh and will the 5000 series intel hp board in the xw8400 pc support those processors? Can't find them listed as compatible anywhere.

Sorry if my questions are dumb, but I am really new at this.

Thank you again for the help.

Sorry about the delay-didn't see your posts, the mod for Core 2 Quad Q9*** will work: http://www.overclockers.com/intel-lga775-pad-modding/

"CPU Frequency" 400 is what you'd want to do.

Hello, I got the cpus installed today in my pc and I don't get any video output after I power it on,

All the fans start and I don't get any beeping sounds, I also updated the bios before to the latest version wich is 1.34 if I remeber well.

Any ideas what it could be?

Make sure that the pins aren't damaged. Based on Intel's motherboard+chipset specifications they should be working fine. Also make sure that the CPU power connectors are plugged in fully-sometimes they will appear plugged in when they aren't.

They are plugged in, I've removed the new cpus new and put in just one of the old ones and everything works, I noticed that the old ones are SLAGA and the new ones are SLBBF, what exactly does this mean, could it be a problem? Couldn't find anyhing on this, also the old cpus are rated 65w and the new ones are almost double at 120w, could this also be a problem?

Hey Cosmin1,

i have bought a xw8400 motherboard too. I got it used from ebay for a small buck, but i have the same problem. My first questin would be if you know the Pinout for the Front Panel Connector. Or are you using it in the original Case?

Best regards

Kevin

Hey, I am using the original case, but the front panel connectors are on the bottom of the board and on mine they are each marked with their function

Jea i found the connector, but there are no markings for funktion. Could you maybe make a photo of your marking, that would help me a lot. BTW i have two x5355, they are 120W each, but in my system are a lot of factors that could stop it from working, it starts with the panel connector :-S

I got two x5470, just tried puting one of my old ones in socked 1 and everything worked fine, now I tried with one x5470 in socket 1, no video output nothing, also tried the second x5470 in socket 1 and same result, I don't really have any more ideas right now, I still dont now what SLAGA and SLBBF means, old cpus are SLAGA and the new ones SLBBF

it's 800w, but I just tried with a single x5470 cpu, so the power shouldn't be a problem for a single one, as it need less power than both the 5150 ones that I had before, do you have any idea what SLAGA and SLBBF means? can't find anywhere nothing related to this

That's just the stepping, I'd have to look for specifics but it determines whether or not the CPU are the better versions.

That's just the stepping, I'd have to look for specifics but it determines whether or not the CPU are the better versions.

From what I can find the bios doesn't support the xeon *54** quad cores, just the xeon *53** ones, but can't really find anything specific.

Also looks like the bios can be modded to add other cpu support. But still can't find anything specific on this also
